Technology and media invades our visual field everyday. We are inundated with images that train us to see things in a fast paced way, never allowing us to question what we are seeing and how we feel about it. Contemplative space is lost because it is filled with images, words, and noise. The natural landscape has also been relegated to being taken over as society continues to exploit open space for development.
My videos challenge the ways in which we are being influenced by modern media. I present natural images of the world by slowing down two key elements, time and speed. Subtle events occur through this slowing down process, physically and mentally. As the pace slowly pans across the screen, the audience slowly engages the whole image and every detail. This intensifies our feeling of personal well being and purpose as we view the image. This protracted, slow video gives the audience an opportunity to reconnect with nature and experience silent and quiet spaces in our world.
My photographs also serve as a vehicle to more fully investigate the concept of home and place and the role that the landscape plays in defining who we are in the present and in the future. |
