Fading Fast
Fading Fast is an on going series that analyzes the ways in which tourism and travel influences and often pre-determines our perception of place.
When Things Become Foggy
Most recently I have been interested in looking at the ways that landscapes can be visual equivalents for both mental and psychological states. For example, how can a landscape or weather pattern begin to describe the fogginess that one must feel when their memory fades? How can weather and landscapes that are virtually harmless create cancer in people who live close to the site?
Oil, Rice, Wheat, Cotton
explores delta landscapes from the perspective of a prospector surveying the land for its potential as a source of capital.
The In Between Series is an investigation into home and place. They are about a place you have been to before, the one you are currently in and the one you want to be in forever. They are as much about imaginary places as they are about real ones that are reminiscent of the home you left.
The Deltas project compares and contrasts the agricultural practices and geographical similarities of several Deltas around the world, such as the Mississippi Delta, the Mekong Delta in South East Asia and the Tana Delta in Kenya. I am also interested in focusing on the universality of the these different deltas, which are geographically so far apart.
Horizons, investigates the universality of landscape by focusing on one element- the horizon. By breaking the landscape down to a single element it makes landscapes, which are geographically very distant, appear to be from the same area. Horizons are shot in many locations all over the world.
Presented in Photo Drawings and Land Animal Series are a selection of recent projects that began while traveling through East Africa during the summer of 2005. These will continue to evolve over the coming months.
Landscape and nature has played a vital role in who I am and what my artwork speaks to. The archive shows several bodies of work that investigates these two focuses in several different ways.
Early on I was interested in finding relationships between the physical shape of the human body and the landscape (land-body series). As my work progressed I began making large scale photo collages (gravel pits) that combined several different landscapes into one. At this point I was most interested in creating spaces that I wished I could be in. This was a way for me to create a landscape that did not exist but that held parts of places from travels and memory into the collage. They all represent my personal pursuit of finding my place in a world that is constantly changing.
