One Lake, One View is a long-form photography project documenting Lake Sardis, Mississippi on land and water. Every winter, since 2005, I return to the lake to photograph its northern shore where the waters dramatically recede and reveal an almost moonlike landscape. When photographing here I am keenly aware of the history of Lake Sardis, its origins, and the people who inhabited the space long before me. Lake Sardis and its tributary, the Upper Tallahatchie River, provided the Choctaw People with water they believed to have had restorative powers. During the Civil War, the river served as a major defense line.
